The invention relates to a device for protecting a cable against damage due to bending, the cable (10) being capable in a free part of assuming a variety of orientations which are substantially in one and the same plane and within a given angular range starting from a point (12) at which a first end of the cable is fixed. According to the invention, the device comprises a mandrel (14), the axis (B) of which is essentially perpendicular to the axis (A) of the cable at the fixing point and essentially perpendicular to the said plane and to the surface of which the said axis of the cable is approximately tangential at the fixing point, about which mandrel the cable is at least partially wound regardless of the orientation of its free part within the said angular range. The change in orientation of the said free part of the cable gives rise to partial winding up or unwinding of the cable around the mandrel, and the cable is thus subjected to bending in just one direction regardless of the orientation of its free part in the said plane. <IMAGE>
