A mask (13) is arranged in the beam path between the laser (1) and the film (7) for forming a pattern for the signs to be transferred. The mask has UV permeable regions in the shape of these signs so that the laser beam is formed with a cross-section corresp. to the signs. Further units provide film transport and alignment so that signs on the mask are aligned with the image field of the film in the laser beam path. A control alters the intensity and duration of the laser beam (1) depending on the signs and characters. The incidence of the beam on the film can be interrupted and, depending on the signs, the film is transported to bring a determined film image field into alignment with the laser (1) and the mask (13). USE/ADVANTAGE - Signs e.g. subtitles can be applied on positive or negative film, colour or black and white film. Emulsion is vapourised but carrier layer of film is left intact. Clean and sharp signs produced without damage to film.
