The video camera is mounted on a tripod together with a unit that contains a group (6) of thermal image sensing elements. The elements may move about a vertical axis and may also tilt. The sensors provide inputs to the control system of the video camera such that the lens system focusses onto an individual or a group of people in the vicinity. The zoom mechanism may be operated such that all individuals are contained within the field of vision. The sensors may be of the pyroelectric infra red emission type. ADVANTAGE - Provides automatic tracking and focussing.
