The holding mechanism is for use when fitting a sleeve onto a cylinder, esp. one acting as a printing block through a side opening in a printing press. The cylinder has a trunnion supported in a bearing in this part of the press sidewall before revoval. A auxiliary holding mechanism (2) clear of the opposite sidewall can be engaged with the other trunnion (5), which protrudes beyond the sidewall, of the cylinder (3), so that the latter is overhung from this wall. An auxiliary shaft (10) is above and at right angles to the trunnion, having a recess (11) at the middle by which it fits over the latter. The auxiliary shaft is eccentrically mounted in bearings (16) and is turned to bring the trunnion into the adjusting position, which can be predetermined by a stop (15). Its bearings are in the sidewalls of a gearbox (9), one of its trunnions being screwed to take nuts (13, 14) either side of the gearbox wall. These adjust it in the axial direction, its movement being transmitted to the cylinder.
