The method of measuring the position of a printing plate involves detecting the plate edges. Linewise measurement of pixels is used to detect a measurement value difference in excess of a defined level, i.e. an intensity step. The coordination of the measurement position are stored. The process is repeated at least twice along the left and right edges of the plate. The top and bottom edges of the plate are detected by at least two linewise measurements of pixels over each breadth of defined plate columns and the measurement point coordinates stored.
