The shift lever has guide grooves (2 -4) for the shift linkage (5) which consists of a rotatable and axially displaceable section (7) and a section (6) set at distance and fixed to the latter. The shift lever (1) pref. has a spherical section (19) at the bottom with an axially aligned bore (20) contg. the axially displaceable pin (22) with a ball section (21). A compression spring (25) is set between a flat surface (23) of the spherical section and a spaced flat surface (24) of the ball section (21), whilst the slide faces (25) of the spherical and ball sections adjoin the spherical slide face (9) of the socket when first to fourth gear are engaged. With reverse or fifth gear only the slide face of the spherical section adjoins the spherical slide face (9) of the socket.
