Non-invasive determination of local heart potentials - measuring potential difference between neighbouring electrodes on surface of thorax and summing absolute contributions to form local potential

Potentials supplied from electrodes (1) on the surface of the thorax are amplified and fed via electronic switches (3,4) to a differential amplifier (5). The differential amplifier forms the difference between neighbouring electrodes. The absolute contributions of these potential differences are summated for each electrode in a computer (7), to form a local potential. Noise voltages and non-local heart potentials act as common-mode signals, and are suppressed by the difference calculation. ADVANTAGE - Reduced risk to patient.
