A coding/decoding apparatus (CODEC) produces the error correction code effectively by using a Reed-Solomon code and a convolution code. The apparatus comprises a pulse producing means (100) for producing at least three different frequency pulse signals, a control means (105) for controlling the pulse producing means and producing the control signals (SL,PL,ENABLE) in response to the pulse signal from the pulse producing means, a parity producing means (110) for producing the parity check bits according to the parallel data from the control means, a selection means (115) for sequentially selecting the parallel data and the parity check bits according to the control signal (SL), a parallel/serial converting means (120), and a convolution coding means (125) for providing the error correction code to the output of the parallel/serial converter.
