The subject is subjected to both pleasant and irritating sounds and pictures to assess stress and tolerance thresholds to cure unwanted habits, e.g. nail-biting and bed wetting. Pulse and skin conductance measurements assess when an individua threshold is reached and allow the interchange between stressful and relaxing atmospheres, allowing the subject to feel, after a time, that he/she was overcome the subconscious behavioural problem. The relaxing experience can be provided by a tape recorder producing plesant sounds or music so that physical functions, e.g. blood pressure, muscle tone, peripheral temp. and metalsolic rate can be normalised.
