Di:methyl sulphate prodn. from di:methyl ether and sulphur tri:oxide - using safe simple plant connected to combustion plant with flue gas desulphurisation

In the prodn. of dimethyl sulphate (I) from dimethyl ether (II) and SO3, liq. (II) is dosed into a highly turbulent mixt. of (I) and S03 in a tubular reactor and immediately dispersed finely in the reaction mixt.. The heat of reaction is removed to ensure almost complete conversion in the circulating system; the (I)-S03 mixt. is kept below its b.pt. at the end of the cooling zone; and the waste gas is passed to a cumbustion plant with flue gas desulphurisation. (II) is pref. dosed into the (I)-S03 mixt. under a pressure of at least 1, pref. 3-6 bar and in amts. regulated by the density of the reaction mixt. at the inlet of the vessel. The waste gas is passed to the rotary calciner of a gypsum-H2SO4 plant. It is introduced into the burner zone or pref. into the suction zone of the coal dust firing injector. Both the discharge pipe from the (I) plant to the gypsum-H2S04 plant and opt. of the (I) plant are kept slightly below atmospheric pressure.
