A method and machine (1) whereby a continuous paper strip (10) and a layer (5) of shredded tobacco supported on the paper strip (10) are fed on to a unit (2) for forming a continuous cigarette rod (3); the strip (10) being curved transversely on the forming unit (2), so as to bring two opposite longitudinal portions (35) into contact with each other, and so form a tubular wrapping (3a) from which the two portions (35) project radially outwards; the two portions (35) being engaged and pressed together by counter-rotating rollers (25) to produce a radial rib (36), which is folded down on to the outer surface (37) of the tubular wrapping (3a) and subsequently secured in the downfolded position. <IMAGE>
