Use of alkaline earth metal fumarate(s) as feed supplements - for supplying weaning pigs with necessary alkaline earth metal without raising pH of gastrointestinal tract

Alkaline earth metal fumarates (I) are used in the mineral component of feeds for weaning pigs. Ca fumarate (Ia) is pref. added in an amt. corresp. to 1-30 (esp. 2-3) wt.% of the mineral component and 0.05-2 wt.% of the total feed. ADVANTAGE - In contrast to CaCO3, (I) provide the necessary alkaline earth metal (esp. Ca) supply without raising the pH in the gastrointestional tract, inhibiting growth of coliform pathogens. In an example, piglets receiving a feed comprising 78% barley, 15% soya meal, 2% soya oil, 1% fumaric acid, 0.125% (Ia) and 3.875% of a mixt. of amino acids, vitamins and trace elements exhibited, in 80% of cases, no feeding disturbance, no depression and no diarrhoea on being weaned.
