A thermal insulating layer for machine-like components (1) has several flat elements (4), mats or insulating cushions arranged abuting against each other on the outside of the component. The individual elements (4) abut each other with lateral front faces (2) that are essentially perpendicular to the underlying surface of the component. Both front faces of each pair of abutting front faces have at least one mutually complementary shoulder (3).
