PURPOSE:To enable an easy retrieval with a simple and inexpensive constitution by automatically discriminating the presence of the information recording of a recording medium after specifying an automatic retrieving mode and executing retrieval or a reproducing operation without unnecessary reproduction. CONSTITUTION:When the automatic retrieving mode is specified by a command means 1, a controlling means 5 run a recording medium 6 at a high speed by the driving means 2 and the recording signal of the medium 6 is read by a pick-up means 3. This signal is transformed into a signal which shows the presence of information recording by a detecting means 4 and when a non-signal condition within a maximum period is detected, a forward direction retrieval is operated by the means 5 and the starting point of the information recording is retrieved. When the non-signal condition within a maximum period is detected by the means 4, a reverse direction retrieval is operated by the medium 6 and the starting point of the information recording is retrieved. When the starting point is detected by the forward direction retrieval, the information recording is reproduced by a user command during reproduction, an operation is returned to the reverse direction retrieval for detecting a non-signal condition over a maximum period. Thus, the constitution is simplified and the retrieval is made easy even if there is a damage on the medium 6 locally. |
