Lactam derivs. of formula (Ia) are new: n=0 or 1; Q'=CH2CH2X' or CH2CH2OH; X'=OCOR or OSO2R1; R1=a 1-8C organic gp. Prodn. of lactam derivs. of formula (I) is effected by (a) reacting a lactam of formula (II) with a vinyl cpd. of formula (III) at 100-200 deg.C in the presence of a radical source to form (I; Q=CH2CH2X); (b) hydrolysing (I; Q=CH2CH2X') to form (I; Q=CH2CH2OH); and (c) heating (I; Q=CH2CH2OH) or (I; Q=CH2CH2X') opt. in the presence of a catalyst, to form (I; Q=CH=CH2): Q=CH2CH2X, CH2CH2OH or CH=CH2; X=OCOR1, OSO2R1, COR2, COOR3 or CONR4R5; R2=1-8C alkyl; R3=H, 1-8C alkyl, 6-8C aryl or 7-8C aralkyl; R4 and R5=H or 1-4C alkyl, or NR4R5 is a 5- or 6-membered ring.
