The thyristor inverter has 2 pairs of series thyristors (1a, 1b, 1c, 1d) connected respectively between the positive and negative terminals of a DC source (3a, 3b) and an output terminal (A), with a choke coil (7a, 7b) between each 2 series thyristors (1a, 1b, 1c, 1d). Respective diodes (5a, 5b) biased in opposite directions are connected between the junction of each coil (7a, 7b) and the second thyristor (1b, 1c) and a centre potential node (B) for the DC source (3a, 3b). A series capacitor (11a, 11b, 11c, 11d) and diode (12a, 12b, 12c, 12d) lies in parallel across each thyristor (1a, 1b, 1c, 1d) with discharge resistances (18a, 18b) cross coupling the centre junctions of these series circuits.
