The invention relates to a method and arrangements for the detection of pollution in aqueous media, such as for example the detection of pollution of waterways, or of waste. The method comprises the steps consisting in: - extracting the organic compounds contained in the water to be analysed using a solvent which absorbs little or no infrared electromagnetic radiation; - using spectography means allowing the infrared absorption spectrum of the said organic compounds in the said water to be analysed in the said solvent; The method is characterised in that it comprises the steps consisting in: - picking up and storing the reference infrared spectrum of the said predetermined aqueous medium; - picking up the current spectrum of the said predetermined aqueous medium; the said current spectrum and the said reference spectrum extending at least over the range going from approximately 4000 cm<-1> to 600 cm<-1>, - calculating a correlation coefficient of the said current spectrum with the said reference spectrum, - detecting anomalies.
