<p>A programmable sewing head (10) including a work controlling clamping mechanism (12) is automatically loaded with a flexible sheet (B) of air bag material, together with a reinforcement ring strategically placed thereon, for automatic attachment (by a predetermined stitching pattern) of the reinforcement ring to the sheet of bag material. A table (22) having a loading station (20) supports the sheet, and orients an aperture in the sheet with the reinforcement ring. The table (22) extends to a transfer station at the sewing head (10). A locator aperture (30) and a retractable locator pad (35) are provided in the table surface (24) at the loading station (20) for receiving the sheet and reinforcement ring. Placement of the reinforcement ring and the sheet over the locator pad (35) aligns the reinforcement ring with respect to the hole in the sheet. A transfer pad (40), having a configuration corresponding to the locator pad (35) is supported over the table surface, normally located near the loading station, and is movable into vertical alignment with the locator pad (35), for movement (a) along a vertical path extending through said locator pad, and also (b) for movement along the loading path to the sewing head. The transfer pad has a pilot portion (40B) constructed to be force fit through the reinforcement ring and the related hole in the sheet, to displace the locator pad from the sheet and the reinforcement ring. Movement of the transfer pad (40) along the table carries the parts into position for transfer into the clamping mechanism (12) and for sewing. <IMAGE> <IMAGE></p> |
