PURPOSE:To obtain retinoic acid in high yield by reacting retinoids with a cultured product of a specific microorganism or its treated product. CONSTITUTION:A retinoid of formula I (R is CH2OH, CHO, CH2OCOCH3 or CH2OCOC15H31; the structure of all double bonds are trans-form) is made to react with a cultivation product or a treated cultivation product of a microorganism capable of converting the retinoid into retinoic acid of formula II (the structure of all double bonds are trans-form). The retinoic acid of formula II useful as a medicine and nutrient agent can be separated from the reaction mixture. The microorganism to be used in the present process is the strain belonging to genus Steptomyces, Amycolata, Monascus, Schizophyllum, Ascochyta or Colletotrichum. |
