PURPOSE:To provide the ferroelectric liquid crystal element which sufficiently display its fast response and memory effect characteristics and the liquid crystal display device which uses the ferroelectric liquid crystal element by preventing an orientation defect from being caused. CONSTITUTION:Ferroelectric liquid crystal 4 is sandwiched between a couple of parallel substrates 2 and 3 where transparent electrodes are formed and then a color filter 11 is provided between the transparent electrodes and substrate on at least one side to form the ferroelectric liquid crystal element, wherein the difference in surface roughness among the color filters of respective picture elements is <=0.1mum.
