PURPOSE:To provide the liquid crystal display device which has a good contrast by eliminating a light leak at the periphery of a light shield film, i.e., at the periphery of an electrode edge as to a liquid crystal display device which uses a voltage-controlled birefringent liquid crystal and is provided with a black matrix for contrast improvement. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal display device has 1st and 2nd transparent substrates 61 and 65 which are arranged opposite each other at a specific interval, a 1st transparent electrode 62 which is arranged on the opposite surface of a 1st substrate from a 2nd substrate and has a specific electrode pattern, a 2nd electrode 64 which is arranged on the opposite surface of the 2nd transparent substrate from the 1st transparent substrate and has a specific electrode pattern, a birefringent liquid crystal layer 63 which is arranged between the opposite surfaces of the 1st and 2nd transparent electrodes, and a nonconductive light shield film 66 which is arranged on the opposite surface of the 2nd transparent substrate from the 1st transparent substrate at the part where the 2nd transparent electrode is absent; and the light shield film is arranged covering the peripheral edge of the 2nd adjacent transparent electrode to specific width 661. |
