The mechanism clamps a tool (15), particularly a grinder disc, in the axial direction against the flange (16) of a driven spindle (10), using a nut (17) screwing onto the latter. A washer (21) between the nut and the tool slides with the former and cannot turn in relation to it. Supporting bodies (50) in the form of ring segments and of tapering cross-section form a track supporting the nut and press the tool against the flange, the nut and washer having mating cone faces (25,26) for them. An actuating ring (29) between washer and nut turns in relation to them and has an inner track for balls (24) running against that formed by the bodies, in the path of which are driving dogs (34) on the ring. On turning the latter in one direction the balls run along the tracks and unload the bodies in the radial and the washer in the axial direction. The washer and/or nut have for each ball a transverse stop (31) across its path, while the ring is spring-loaded away from the release direction, its dogs pressing the balls against the stops. Radial recesses in the ring track allow the balls to deflect outwards when released. |
