In an internal combustion engine, in particular a single-cylinder engine, having a manual starting device and a return kick safeguard, a crank handle (12) can engage a starting claw (4) by means of a starting journal and an overriding clutch. The starting claw (4) is fixedly linked to and end of of the shaft of the internal combustion engine. A free-wheel (130) is supported in such a way on the flywheel side of the internal combustion engine housing that the free-wheel (13) rotates freely in the starting direction of rotation (A) and is blocked in the opposite direction. The free-wheel (13) is non rotatively mounted with its inner circumference, directly or over an intermediate ring having a larger diameter, on the thick end (14) of the crankshaft (5) that has a larger diameter and is located on the side of the flywheel.
