Caprolactam (I) is prepd. by heating 6-aminocaproic acid, its esters, amides or mixts. of these (II) in the presence of an inert hydrocarbon reaction medium (III) having b.pt. higher than that of (I), the process comprising heating the (III) at 150-350 deg.C, adding the (II) at a rate at which it is decomposed, and removing (I) from the reaction medium as it is formed.
