A gripper forming part of a handling system for locating or moving components of different shapes and sizes comprises at least two fixed cheeks (1) enclosing a pressurised air chamber (3). A front chamber wall (4) facing the component has through holes (6). Needle-like pistons (7) seal off and slide in the holes (6) under air pressure in the chamber (3). The remote end of the needle (7) adapts to the appropriate profile of the workpiece. USE/ADVANTAGE - The gripper is used for safely locating and holding components, e.g. in machine tools, injection moulding machines, has a simple construction, is automatic and can adapt to different profiles.
