Method of removing soot particles from diesel exhaust - has perforated pipe inserted in front of converter

A diesel engine with an oxidation-type catalytic converter (4) in the exhaust pipe (1) has a perforated pipe (9) located immediately upstream of the converter. Until the temperature rises, the exhaust gas flow accelerates and the converter reaches operating temperature, soot particles pass into an annular area (8) formed between the perforated pipe and the walls of the exhaust pipe and converter housing (3). The number, size and arrangement of perforations in the pipe may vary, but it is most effective to cover the whole circumference and most of the length, with the upstream holes having a diameter larger than that of those downstream. USE/ADVANTAGE - Prevents the converter clogging, simple to produce and fit, effective over the whole engine operating range.
