A process is disclosed for controlling a preferably electro-hydraulically actuated gear box of a motor vehicle provided with an internal combustion engine. According to this process, a gradual downshift takes place during braking, in particular when an upshift lock is activated when the vehicle approaches curves. The upshift lock is initiated by quickly releasing the gas pedal during overrun. The upshift lock is suppressed when no curve is turned a certain time after the traction mode of operation has been recognized. At the end of the suppression of the upshift lock, the speed is gradually adapted to the standard given in the gear shift characteristic diagram.
