Light coloured polyarylene ether prepn. - by nucleophilic polycondensation of di-halogen cpd. and bisphenol in presence of cpd. with condensed ring system

Polyarylene ethers (1) with repeating units of formula -(O-HQ(R1)(R2)-O-E)- (I), are prepd. as (co)polymers, by nucleophilic polycondensation of a di-halo cpd. with a bisphenol, in presence of 0.01-5 wt.% of a cpd. wtih a higher condensed ring system. In (I), R1, R2 = H, alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, phenoxy or halogen; HQ = phenylene gp. or 1,4-naphthylene gp. wth R1 and R2 in 2,3-position; E = residue of a divalent, aromatic di-halogen gp. in which the halogens have been activated by electron-attracting gps. in the o- or p-position. Pref. the di-halo cpd. is 1,4-bis(4'-fluorobenzoyl)benzene (II) and/or 1,4-bis(4'-chlorobenzoyl)benzene, or 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone (III) and/or 4,4'-dichlorobenzophenone, and the bisphenol is hydroquinone. The bisphenol is pref. a mixt. of hydroquinone and 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl. The condensed aromatic cpd. pref. has formula (2), where R = H, alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy, a benzene-fused gp., or halogen (H, 1-3C alkyl, esp. Me, Ph, Cl, Br, methoxy, phenoxy or benzoyl); x = 0-4. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are used in prodn. of mouldings, injection moulded goods, adhesives, coatings and matrix materials for composites, and for medical articles, household equipment, protective coatings, films and fibres (claimed). (I) can also be used in cable jackets. (I) have a light colour and low gel content, are stable on melting and are easily processed and mixed with other polymers, fillers and reinforcing agents, and other additives.
