For holding a pressure compensating element in the form of a PTFE diaphragm (6) in a simple manner and in a water-tight fashion in an opening in the wall of a casing, e.g. gearbox casing, by means of a retention ring (3) which can be inserted into the opening in the casing and fixed in its end position claw-fashion, the invention provides that the retention ring (3) is designed as a holder for the diaphragm (6), which can be premounted on the said retention ring, and is provided at the edge with at least one circumferential flexible sealing lip (31), by means of which, after insertion into the opening in the wall of the casing, the retention ring (3) with the premounted diaphragm (6) can be fixed claw-fashion therein in a watertight manner.
