Polyarylene ethers (I) are claimed, contg. 1-100 mol.% units of formula -(O-Tr-O-E')- (A) and 0-99 mol.% units of formula -(O-E-O-E')- (B), E = residue of dihydric phenol, E' = residue of aromatic dihalo cpd., Tr = residue of triptycene-bisphenol of formula (II) (with R' = H or SiMe3, R, R2, R3 = H, alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy, benz-annellated residues or halogen, x = 0 or 1-4). Amts. are 3-30 mol.% (A) and 70-97 mol.% (B) or 70-100 mol.% (A) and 0-30 mol.% (B), R1, R2, R3 = H and x = 0, residues E' are derived from 1,4-bis-(4'-fluorobenzoyl)-benzene (III) and/or 4,4' -difluorobenzophenone or 4,4'-dichloro-diphenylsulphone, apart from residue (Tr). (I) can also contain residues of hydroquinone and/or Bisphenol A or 4,4'-dihydroxy-diphenylsulphone. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful for the prodn. of mouldings, injection moulded parts, adhesives and coating materials, films, fibres and composites (claimed). Provides new polyarylene ethers with a combination of very high glass transition pt. (Tg) and good melt processing properties.
