The valve stem (6) of an exhaust valve (3) extends upwards to a pneumatic spring (8) mounted to the valve housing. The spring with its associated chamber (13) and plunger (12) is rigidly fixed to the valve stem and loads the exhaust valve shut, while it is opened by a piston (10) in a hydraulic cylinder (9). Above the valve stem mounting is a sealing chamber (18) with an inlet aperture (19) which connects with a drilling (16, 25, 26) leading to the pneumatic spring chamber and which contains a shutoff or pressure regulating device (16) to admit air from the spring chamber when the pressure there exceeds a predetermined level. USE/ADVANTAGE - Prevents exhaust gas penetrating between valve guide and stem, simplified design, smoother operation of exhaust valve.
