The chill mould has two cooled walls bounding the broad sides and two walls bounding the narrow sides of the slab. The mould has a boundary region (10) above the melt level (8) and a high-temp. region (9) below this level. The mould is provided with devices which can expand the boundary region (10) of the broad side walls in the direction of the narrow side walls. USE/ADVANTAGE - The invention can be used in metallurgical plants. Its use, which eliminates the fatigue loading brought about by differential thermal expansion of mould parts, prolongs the life of chill moulds.
