The tactile sediment level sensor has a sensing body (26) which interacts with the surface of the solid material, and a carrier element mounted on a collection container (12). The carrier carries the sensing body and a transducer part which interacts with a second part attached to a housing. The sensing body is driven to a raised starting position and allowed to descend under gravity. The interior of a sensor housing (98) contg. the position transducer parts and drive (58-62) is isolated from the container's interior by a sealing device. The central carrier section is a shaft (38) mounted in a container wall horizontal bearing aperture. The other carrier sections are lever arms (28, 48) perpendicular to the shaft. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for use with collection container of dental centrifuge. Compact level detector can be laterally mounted on collection container.
