The sleeve (5) has an internal wall (8) which is formed so that an annular cavity (11), for receiving an adhesive, is defined by the internal wall (8) and the pipe or pipe fitting (4) when the pipe or pipe fitting (4) is inserted into the sleeve (5). In the preferred embodiment of the system the internal wall (8) has an inwardly directed annular projection (9).</p>
