Process for obtaining L-carboxymethyl-L-cysteine from L- cysteine by electrochemical methods. The compound which is to be obtained corresponds to the structural formula <IMAGE> The process is performed using flat electrodes or electrodes of any other shape in a variable number in each cell, with the anode and cathode of specific materials including lead and graphite, the catholyte and the anolyte being separated by an anion or cation- selective membrane, the catholyte including an aqueous or non-aqueous solution of L-cysteine and the anolyte containing any other salt electrolyte, the catholyte also containing monochloroacetic acid or its salts and the electrolysis being performed at a temperature of between 0 and 90 degree C, at a current density of between 10 mA/cm2 and 2 A/cm2, with the possibility of previously treating the catholyte with activated carbon, at a pH between 2 and 3, leaving it to stand until total precipitation takes place, filtering it and washing it twice with water and drying it in a vacuum at 50 degree C.
