Connected to one of the containers 6 arranged on the shelves 4 inside the autoclave 1 and dipping into the water 9, is a plate 10 held in position by a securing device 8. The plate 10 is positioned slightly above the flexible lid 7 of the container 6 and has a vertical hole 11 at its centre. The hole 11 is connected to a tube 12 which emerges outside the autoclave. When the autoclave is heated, the air admitted into it via a tube 14 causes a jet of water 17 to be emitted outside the autoclave via the tube 12. If the lid 7 swells as a result of internal pressure, the hole 11 becomes blocked, which stops the emission of the jet 17, thereby warning the user. The invention is applicable to the food preservation industry, especially in cases where the products to be sterilised are contained inside containers closed with a thin plastic film. <IMAGE>
