Device for controlling and limiting the tilting torque of a bracket, particularly for support of a handling arm of a crane, lifting cradle (pod), work table (bed) or the like, in which the arm is cantilevered. According to the invention, this device is characterised in that the handling arm (7, 35, 53) is mounted so that it can move about a transverse axis (11, 32, 52) carried by the bracket arranged horizontally and capable of moving in terms of rotation about a vertical axis, this transverse axis being connected to the bracket by means of a control member (13, 39, 59) which is inextensible or not very extensible, articulated respectively to the arm and the bracket, this member being located, with respect to the circle centred on the transverse axis and the radius (D) of which corresponds to the distance measurement between this axis and the line of action of the control member on the arm, so that for a very slight variation (e) in the length of the control member, the distance of action (d) of the force which counterbalances (fits) the reaction (R) of the said member remains practically constant. <IMAGE>
