A coating and refining agent for melting zinc, aluminium and other alloys, containing 0.1 - 90 percent parts by weight of potassium chloride, sodium chloride and borax, characterised in that it contains 0.1 - 90 percent parts by weight of sodium chloride, 0.1 - 90 percent parts by weight of zinc chloride, 0.1 - 90 percent parts by weight of calcium chloride, 0.1 - 40 percent parts by weight of ammonium chloride as well as sodium sulfate, borax, boron acid and potassium sulfate, total content of which amounts to up to 45 percent.
