The present invention relates to a method for the capture and reproduction of tapestries on canvas, these consisting of a set of points forming a front side and a back side, including, especially, the following steps: a) capture of the tapestry in the form of a video image, a point on the tapestry corresponding to at least one elementary point or pixel of the video image; b) superimposing, on the captured video image, a screen (frame), the intersections of which are in correspondence with the points on the tapestry; c) determining, for each intersection of the screen, the colour of the corresponding point on the tapestry; d) creating a first colour palette combining, in addition to a reference colour, at least all the colours available on the front side of the tapestry; e) assigning, to the colour defined at each intersection of the screen, one of the colours of this first palette, including the reference colour. It also relates to a tracing machine (4) and an automatic reproduction device (3), these being necessary for the implementation of this method. <IMAGE>
