PURPOSE:To prepare a molded article of carbon having high strength, by blending a mixture of pitch and carbide particles with a viscosity modifier, molding the blend in molten state, removing the viscosity modifier through extraction, followed by sintering it. CONSTITUTION:(A) 100pts.wt. mixture consisting of 30-95wt% petroleum or coal pitch (preferably a softening point not lower than 140 deg.C) and 5-70wt% carbide consisting essentially of an amorphous carbon, e.g., green coke, charcoal, etc., having particle diameters not more than 200mu is blended with (B) 5-50pts.wt. viscosity modifier (naphthalene, methylanthracene, biphenyl, etc.), and the blend is molded in molten state. The viscosity modifier is extracted with an organic solvent and removed, the prepared material is made nonfusible, sintered, and activated to give a molded article of active carbon. |
