<p>The invention relates to the finishing of rigid articles, for example car mats, by the self-adhesion of the free end of the overcast selvedge. It involves displacing the article (2) on a support (17) longitudinally in the direction of the side of the article where said free end is located, injecting in line with said selvedge (4) air brought to a temperature close to the softening temperature of the thermoplastic material forming the selvedge yarn, and, immediately thereafter, compressing the selvedge (4) continuously. Preferably, in the installation of the invention, the support (17) is inclined and comprises a longitudinal stop (13) for retaining the article (4). The support consists, for example, of parallel juxtaposed rollers (8) driven in rotation. Compression is carried out by a cylinder (19) equipped with a compression spring.
