A fuel oil composition comprises an oil-in-water emulsion containing 50 to 90% by volume of a sulphur-containing oil having an API gravity in the range 5 to 25 DEG and 50 to 10% by volume of an aqueous solution of an emulsifying surfactant, the oil droplets having a mean droplet diameter in the range 2 to 50 micron. The emulsion additionally comprises a solid sulphur sorbent in the form of solid particles of an alkaline earth metal oxide, hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate, the particles having a mean diameter in the range 2 to 50 micron. The sulphur sorbent is present in amount such that the molar ratio of the alkaline earth metal in the solid to the sulphur in the oil is in the range 0.2:1 to 5:1.
