CONTINUOUS PROCESS FOR PRODUCING 1,2-DIOLS

Continuous production of 1,2-diols by saponification of aliphatic, linear or branched epoxides containing 8 to 30 carbon and high-molecular cycloaliphatic epoxides with water and an acid catalyst at pressures of 1 to 5 bars, using a vapour and liquid mixture of a solubilizing intermediary being stationary in a column. The yields obtained are high while the degree of purity is good. The water used can be recycled as such.
