The aromatic copolyester having a repeating unit of formula (I) is produced by (a) mixing resorcinol diacetate (II), terephthalic acid (III) and p-acetoxy benzoic acid in the presence of a catalyst, i.e. antimony trioxide or alkali metal acetate, and a stabilizer, i.e. phosphorus, phenol or amine cpd., under the nitrogen atmosphere upto 260 deg.C to make an acetic acid flow out, and (b) reacting the reactant at 280-320 deg.C and 0.1-0.5 mmHg vacuum degree. In (I), m is 1-150, n is 0-150 and n/(m+n) is 0.2. The copolyester has a low melting point.
