PURPOSE:To allow recording at a high density by providing a recording layer which consists of a monomolecular film of an org. compd. or the accumulated films accumulated with the monomolecular films and has a electric memory effect on a substrate electrode disposed to face a probe electrode. CONSTITUTION:The probe electrode 201 is brought near to the recording medium 1 to the extent that a tunnel current flows between the probe electrode 201 and the substrate electrode 102 and thereafter, a voltage for recording is impressed from the probe electrode 201 to the recording layers 103, 105. Information pits are written by changing the electric characteristics of the recording layer in such a manner. After the desired information is recorded on the recording layer, the voltage for reproduction is impressed to the electrode 201 while the probe electrode 201 is held in proximity to the extent of passing the tunnel current. The probe electrode 201 is then scanned on the front surface of the recording medium 1, by which the change in the electric characteristics of the recording pit parts is read out from the change in the detecting current by the probe electrode. The reproduction is thus executed.
