Liquid crystal (LC) medium contains a LC phase (I) and solid particles (II), tightly packed in (I) and mobile under external influences. The ratio Q of vol. displaced by (II)/relative solid vol. of (II) is 0.005 0.15. Pref., (I) is a nematic or smectic phase. Q is 0.01 0.06 and can be increased to max. 1.7, pref. max. 1.1 times this value by densification by centrifugal acceleration between 13800 and 21600 m/s2. (II) have a specific surface area of 30 700 m2/g and prim. dia. of 2 90 pref. 5 40 nm. They consist of an inorg. material, pref. pyrogenic SiO2 or a deriv. of this with organic gps.
