The method is for reducing the level of a mining roadway (3) below a conveyor (6) which is driven forward by a ram (25) and supported by skids (8) from beneath. At the leading end (9) of the skids a horizontally swinging arm (11) pivotted on a vertical axle (10), swings from a position parallel to the end forward through an arc to a position at right angles to the end. Excavating tools (13) are fixed to the free end of the arm and are power driven by a ram (15). The excavating tool is equipped with scraper chisels (14). USE/ADVANTAGE - The chisels scrape away the formation as the machinery advances along the road.
