Complete conversion of unsorted waste material of all types contg. a variety of toxic components, such as industrial waste, specialist waste, domestic refuse and industrial scrap is claimed in which the whole of the solid residual material resulting from thermal decomposition of the material to be disposed of is discharged in molten liq. form at temps. of ca. 1300 deg. C and opt. granulated in a water bath. The discharged molten liq. residual material obtd. by thermal dry distn. is well mixed and, opt. after sepn. of at least part of the metallic components, converted into a 2nd high temp. melt which eliminates the non-homogeneous structures and elutible residues, using the energy of the gases recovered during the degassing. Completely inert high value industrial prods. in semi-finished or final form are recovered from the melt with large part of their inherent energy. USE/ADVANTAGE - The homogenised high temp. melt may be collected and its inherent energy utilised for converting the molten material into useful prods. e.g, by casting, spinning, moulding, etc., to give materials useful in building, roadmaking, as cement additives, etc., and fibres and rockwool-like prods. useful as thermal insulation, asbestos substitutes for reinforcment of building panels, etc. The prods. are homogeneous ceramic-like materials contg. no elutible materials and thus cause no environmental pollution or toxicity effects w.r.t man, animals or plan
