When the handling of a load (10) with the aid of a lifting machine requires the use of a sling, the fastening of the load to the lower end of each of the lengths (strands) (14) of the sling takes place by inserting a hook (20) mounted on this length into a housing (32) formed directly in the load or in a member attached to the latter. The housing (32) includes an orifice (32a) accessed from above through which the hook (20) can be inserted by tilting, and a lower recess (32b) serving to house the bent-over end (20b) of the hook. The recess (32b) is shaped such that the hook (20) is held therein with its end (20a) pointing towards the outside of the load and its mid-plane passing through the centre of gravity of the latter. <IMAGE>
