PURPOSE:To attain perfect alloying and to obtain a catalyst for a fuel cell having excellent characteristics by depositing cobalt hydroxide on a platinum catalyst and treating the resulting nonalloy powder in a nitrogen atmosphere at a high temp. CONSTITUTION:Chloroplatinic acid is reduced to form a platinum catalyst, cobalt nitrate is added and pH is adjusted with an aq. ammonia soln. to deposit cobalt hydroxide on the platinum catalyst. The resulting nonalloy powder is treated in a nitrogen atmosphere at 1,000-1,200 deg.C. By this treatment, alloying of platinum with cobalt proceeds well and a binary alloy catalyst of a small crystallite diameter is produced. When this catalyst is used, a fuel cell having excellent characteristics and reliability is obtd. |
